Assignment Two - Final Submission

Subject : The Bordeaux House by Rem Koolhaas

Three Chosen Aspects:
1. Study in detail the overall structural strategy for the building and map the ways in which this thought bears on the suggested life of the house.

2. Map the relationship between interior and exterior spaces in the building; study the way these bear on the rich patterns of programmatic occupation. Do they suggest a possible ideal life?

3. Examine the architectural attitude towards material in the house; the material choice employed and the relationships between different materials. Search for connections between this attitude and the architectural patterns of domestic occupation.

Key Points:
1. Study in detail the overall structural strategy for the building and map the ways in which this thought bears on the suggested life of the house.

- Comprises of a very unique structural construction method
- Free form design is achievable through this method giving the impression that the highest level is suspended over 2 levels of glazing.
- Strong contrast between Bordeaux House construction as shown in Structural Strategy Poster (Key elements shown in red and blue).

I decided to leave the building footprint to show the spacial freedom that this form of construction allows for in comparison to a typical grid systematic design. Refer to image below for typical structural grid system.

Model made of balsa wood to reflect a large restriction on space internally.

2. Map the relationship between interior and exterior spaces in the building; study the way these bear on the rich patterns of programmatic occupation. Do they suggest a possible ideal life?

- The Bordeaux house was designed for a client who was disabled and i believe that it was intentional for the strong use of glazing throughout the house so that the client doesn't feel confined to a certain space or room.
- All of the indoor and outdoor spaces are divided by large panes of glass.
- The large panes of glass open up the living areas and act as a very fine and insignificant divider of inside and outside.

3. Examine the architectural attitude towards material in the house; the material choice employed and the relationships between different materials. Search for connections between this attitude and the architectural patterns of domestic occupation.

- The materiality of the Bordeaux House can be portrayed as a concrete mass levitating, being cantilevered over 2 storeys of a glass box though its unique construction approach.
- I found that the three chosen aspects all inter-relate for he Bordeaux house. The materials used strongly reflect the use of the levels and the indoor and outdoor spaces are unknown due to the transparency behind the materials used.
